Swirled Garlic Herb and Cheese Bread Recipe

For the dough

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary (chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or a blend)


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 1/2 cups of flour, instant yeast, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, rosemary, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt. Mix until well combined.

Step 3: Shape the Bread

  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12 × 18 inches).
  2. Spread the garlic herb butter mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly on top.
  3. Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the seams to seal.
  4. Using a sharp knife, slice the log in half lengthwise, exposing the swirled filling. Twist the two halves together, cut sides up, to form a braid.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Place the twisted bread on a greased baking sheet or a parchment-lined loaf pan. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 5: Cool and Serve

  1. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before slicing.
  2. Serve warm and enjoy.
