Ingredients
• 1 medium head of green cabbage, chopped
• 4 slices of bacon, chopped
• 1 medium onion, sliced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
• Red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Bacon
1. Cook Bacon: In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 5–7 minutes.
2. Drain: Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Leave the bacon drippings in the skillet.
Step 2: Sauté Onions and Garlic
1. Add Onions: In the same skillet with the bacon drippings, add the sliced onions. Sauté for about 3–4 minutes until they are translucent.
2. Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, being careful not to burn it.
Step 3: Cook the Cabbage
1. Add Cabbage: Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to combine with the onions and garlic.
2. Season: Season with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using). Stir to coat the cabbage evenly with the seasonings.
3. Cook Down: Cover the skillet and cook for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender. If you prefer a crunchier texture, reduce the cooking time.
Step 4: Finish and Serve
1. Add Bacon: Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, stir in the cooked bacon and apple cider vinegar (if using).
2. Serve: Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve warm as a side dish.
