- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans, optional)
For the Hot Honey Drizzle:
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1–2 teaspoons red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Step 2: Prepare the Apple Filling
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are well coated.
- Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
Step 3: Make the Crisp Topping
- In a medium bowl, mix together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt.
- Pour in the melted butter and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture is crumbly.
- If using, fold in the chopped nuts for added crunch.
Step 4: Assemble and Bake
- Evenly spread the crisp topping over the apple filling in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
Step 5: Prepare the Hot Honey Drizzle
- In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the honey until it becomes more fluid.
- Stir in the red pepper flakes, adjusting the amount to your preferred spice level. Remove from heat.
Step 6: Serve
- Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, drizzled with the hot honey mixture. It pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
