Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
- Combine Ingredients: Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
Step 2: Roll and Shape
- Roll Out Dough: Once the dough has risen, turn it onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut into Shapes: Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into oval shapes, resembling beaver tails.
Step 3: Fry the BeaverTails
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry Dough: Carefully place the shaped dough into the hot oil, frying a few at a time. Fry for about 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Drain: Remove the BeaverTails from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Step 4: Add Toppings
- Top the Pastries: While still warm, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or spread with Nutella. Add any additional toppings you like, such as bananas, nuts, whipped cream, or berries.
- Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy the deliciousness of homemade BeaverTails!
